The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has announced the establishment of its first-ever award to recognize women in the field of cosmetic science.
The Florence Wall Award for Women in Cosmetic Chemistry honors women’s scientific and leadership contributions to the cosmetics and personal care industries.
Wol was the first woman to receive the Maison G. de Navarre Award from the SCC in 1996, and she was a renowned authority on hair coloring. With the establishment of the first graduate school for hair-coloring specialists in the 1920s, she was inducted into the Beauty Hall of Fame in 1965.

SCC Executive Director and CEO Erica O’Grady stated, “In an era when the industry was dominated by men, Florence Wall was a pioneering woman in the field of cosmetic science.” “Throughout her life, Florence published five books and more than 300 articles in this field, and she voiced critical opinions during the drafting of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938—the first congressional legislation to address cosmetic safety.”
The award is sponsored by Rodan + Fields, a skincare brand founded by women, and will be presented at the 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting and Technology Exhibition of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, held December 17–18, 2019, at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel.
“Women like Florence Wall have paved the way for us in the field of cosmetic science,” said Kelly Dobos, President of the SCC and Americas Cosmetic Technology Manager at Sun Chemical Corporation. “I am delighted that the board has approved the establishment of this award to recognize scientists like Florence who have made outstanding contributions to our industry.”
